Suzani bedspreads, furniture throws, wall hangings. "Suzani" means needlework and is a type of embroidered and decorative tribal textile. The birthplace of suzani is in what is now Uzbekistan, the area along the Silk Road. They are amongst the most exciting and beautiful Central Asian embroideries known, and it is not surprising that they have become known as the 'Great Embroideries of Bukhara'. The suzani was an integral part of a woman's artistic expression in Uzbekistan for hundreds of years. In traditoin, as soon as a girl was born her mother would start embroidering the suzani for her. As the daughter grew older, she would join in the process. The suzani would eventually become a part of her dowry and be used to decorate her home. These intricate and lovingly-made textiles can be used in so many ways to add texture, romance, and delight to any room. The pieces are produced under widely varying circumstances both in cities and villages, both in workshops and in homes especially in craft centers in the Tashkent, Nurata, Samarkand, Bukhara and Shahrisabz areas. Now gorgeous contemporary embroideries decorate not only Uzbek homes, but also grace European and American households. Traditional stitches are used in a majority of the pieces: primarily basma stitch, sometimes called Bukhara couching, and less often, chain stitch. An unbelievable amount of time and care goes into the making of each piece. After nearly a century of synthetic dye use in Central Asia, the best workshops in Uzbekistan have now returned to traditional natural dyes for the most glorious colors. The dye materials used include madder, cochineal, indigo, walnut, pomegranate, and sumak, along with assorted others. On lustrous silks, the results are deep, rich, mellow, and glowing. Suzanis are delightful wall hangings, bedspreads, furniture throws, pillows, or even tablecloths. |
